Speaker Spotlight: Yannick Lefebvre!

Yannick Lefebvre

Yannick Lefebvre is a tech enthusiast and the author of the WordPress Plugin Development Cookbook, published by Packt Publishing. He has been blogging since 2003, started using WordPress in 2004 and published his first plugin, Link Library, in March 2005. Since then, he released seven other plugins, all hosted on the official WordPress.org site. He absolutely loves using WordPress to develop web sites and find PHP to be a most liberating language compared to more traditional languages such as C/C++.

Yannick will be giving a talk titled Plugins: A Double-Edged Sword.

What is your favorite improvement to WordPress this past year?

I have really been enjoying the new media manager in version 3.5. I find it to be a great improvement over previous versions.

Why did you decide to speak at WordCamp Montreal?

I have been using WordPress since the early days and have always wanted to give back to the community, first through my plugins, and now presenting at my fourth WordCamp Montreal. Year after year, I have been getting great feedback from attendees who have appreciated all of the tidbits of plugin knowledge that I have shared in my talks and I hope to be able to deliver once again.

What is your talk going to be about?

I will be talking about the good and bad sides of plugins. While plugins are part of what makes WordPress so special, they are also what make many users cringe with all of the problems that they can bring to a web site. My talk will explain to users and integrators how to deal with the various types of issues that they might encounter around plugin deployment and how to create a stable environment.

What is the one thing you want people to walk away with from your talk?

That plugins can really enhance a web site when you know how to take control of them.

Who in the WordPress community inspires you? Who do you follow?

Long-time plugin developers like Joost de Valk (@yoast) and Takayuki Miyoshi (@takayukister) have always been an inspiration to me. They have created amazingly popular plugins, such as WordPress SEO and Contact Form 7, that so many people rely on everyday on their site.

What new feature would you like to see in the future?

A built-in form builder to be able to create things like contact forms. While plugins like Contact Form 7 are great, I feel like form-building should be added to basic WordPress functionality.

WordPress Training for Women?

The Montreal WordPress Community is considering organizing a training session for women in conjunction with our fifth annual WordCamp which takes place on June 29 & 30, 2013. We’d like to know if there is interest for a training workshop.

The training session would take place over three hours on an evening in downtown Montreal. WordPress experts would lead the training and act as volunteer teaching assistants for this hands-on workshop.

The Troubleshooting WordPress workshop is aimed at experienced WordPress users who need a little bit of encouragement and education to be confident in their ability to troubleshoot broken WordPress sites. This is a very specific course, and is not a new user workshop.

This session would be offered in English (though some TAs would be able to field questions in French).

Update:

The Montreal WordPress Community is pleased to offer a special training session for women in conjunction with our fifth annual WordCamp. The training workshop will take place on Tuesday July 2, from 6-9pm at Station C, 5605 avenue de Gaspé, suite 204.

The Troubleshooting WordPress workshop will be taught by Hanni Ross. Men are welcome.

This session is offered in English (though some TAs may be able to field questions in French). Spaces are extremely limited. In order to attend this session you must first purchase a ticket for WordCamp Montreal, and then register for this special training event.

Help Us Add a Third Track!

This year we had an un precedented number of quality speaker applications. And while we are thrilled to announce our 2-track speaker lineup and list of talks for WordCamp Montreal 2013, we would love to include a third track. We have enough speakers, a room is available, but unfortunately we just don’t have the budget. We need your help.

If we can raise $3000 by Tuesday May 21, we can add a third track of excellent speakers and make WordCamp Montreal 2013 truly the best yet. We’ve already contacted over 80 companies and organizations and have been lucky enough to find some really wonderful sponsors. But we need more.

Please reach out to your friends and colleagues to see if they would like to support an amazing open source software event in Montreal. If you have any suggestions for potential sponsors feel free to leave their name in the comments or contact us directly.

Thank you for your help!

The Happiness Bar Needs You!

Are you a WordPress expert? Do you like helping others and contributing to the open source community? Well here’s your chance!

What is the Happiness Bar?
The Happiness Bar is a special activity at WordCamp where local and visiting WordPress experts offer help and advice to other attendees who come up to the “bar” with their questions. Help a beginners just starting out, solve a tricky configuration problem or a plugin issue, or help an enterprise figure out how WordPress can fit into their plans.

How much time do I have to commit to?
As a Happiness Bar volunteer you need to commit to one-hour blocks of time. Choose one block or many!

What are the benefits?
It’s a lot of fun and a great way to meet new people and show them how much you know (maybe they’ll hire you!). Happiness Bar volunteers don’t get free attendance because it’s a fun and rewarding activity on it’s own. It’s also a great way to give back to the open source community.

How can I get involved?
If you’re better at answering questions than asking please come to the bar and help out! You can sign up to be an official happiness barista on the volunteering page.

Come to the WordCamp Montréal Picnic

Want even more WordCamp fun? Come to our family-friendly picnic on Monday, July 1 at 11:30.

This year, since WordCamp Montreal falls on the Canada Day long weekend, we’re organizing a picnic the day after WordCamp. We’ll be meeting at 11:30 at Mount Royal Park. The park is near Parc Avenue and Mont-Royal Boulevard. We’ll be meeting between the gazebo and the George-Étienne Cartier Monument (view on Google Maps). Bring your lunch!

This event doesn’t require tickets (you will need a ticket to attend the conference, of course). Feel free to bring along friends and family. This is a child-friendly event. Everyone is welcome, just bring enough lunch for you and your friends.

In case of rain, the picnic will be cancelled and we’ll post a message on the WordCamp Montréal website.

Be a True Believer and Microsponsor WordCamp Montreal

Are you a freelancer or a small company or partnership using WordPress? Are you looking for a way to give back to the WordPress community? As in previous years, WordCamp Montreal is offering microsponsorships.

WordPress is a world where you don’t need to be a big company to be a professional and we want to give the smaller players a chance to contribute as well. To this end we are offering a limited number of micro-sponsorships at $200 each.

Note: Only individuals and tiny companies should purchase microsponsorships. We hope that larger organizations will find our other sponsorship levels acceptable.

Micro-sponsors won’t have big logos on the site or merch but will have text links accompanying various sponsor listings. You will also be given opportunities during the event to address attendees with a promotional message about you and whatever WordPress-related services you offer.

By limiting the number of these available we hope to make each micro-sponsor a rockstar at the event itself.

We usually sell Micro-sponsorships as a form of really expensive ticket to simplify the process of signing up.
